FLT extension Tour - Golden Rock - Mawlamyaing - Hpa-An

Yangon - Kyaiktiyo (Golden Rock) - Mawlamyaing - Hpa-An - Bago - Yangon

Day 1. Yangon - Kyaiktiyo (by car)
Day 2. Kyaiktiyo - Mawlamyaing (by car)
Day 3. Mawlamyaing - Thanbyuzayat - Kyaikkhami - Mawlamyaing (by car)
Day 4. Mawlamyaing - Hpa An (by public boat)
Day 5. Hpa-An - Bago - Yangon (by car)

Day 1. After breakfast, depart from Yangon to the Kyaiktiyo (Golden Rock) Pagoda. You will go by car via Kyaiktho town to reach the "Kim Pun" base camp (around 4 to 5 hours drive). There you will have to leave your car and join a public, open truck for the ride up the mountain. Walk for another hour up the hill to the Golden Rock Pagoda, located at around 1100 meters above sea level. (those who wish can ask to be carried by sedan chair - additional charges apply).
A small stupa was built on a large boulder, which seems falling down any moment.
Legend has it that the boulder keeps its balance due to a Buddha hair. You will observe pilgrims praying, lighting candles and putting thin gold leaves on the boulder.

Enjoy the sunset at the Pagoda and walk to your hotel near the Golden Rock or 45 Minutes below. Please bring a torch!

Day 2. After breakfast, take the public truck back to the base camp and continue with your private car to Mawlamyaing, the capital of Mon State. Visit Mahamuni Pagoda and the Mon Cultural Museum. It offers a nice collection of artifacts, old Buddha Images, Mon language manuscripts and many more.
You may visit Gaungse Kyun Island, a small island midstream of Thanlwin river where a monastery for monks and nuns offers a meditative atmosphere. The only way to access the island is by taking a small engine boat.

Day 3. After breakfast, drive to Thanbyuzayat, known as the end of the "death railroad" from Thailand and visit the Allied war cemetery. Continue driving to the idyllic located Kyaikhami Pagoda, built on a little island in the ocean (around 2.5 hours drive from Mawlamyaing). There is a bit further Setse Beach where the water however is muddy and the beach not well kept. It will not invite everybody for a swim. Drive back to Mawlamyaing. 30 minutes before Mawlamyaing you may stop at 2 beautiful steep hills in the plains. It is possible to get up to the top, but the way is very steep and dangerous if it rained. On the way, you will see rubber, durian and pomelo plantations.

Day 4. After breakfast, checkout from the Hotel and continue your trip to Hpa An (2 hours). Visit Go Gon Cave and the town. Hpa-An is the capital of Kayin (Karen) State.

Alternatively climb up Mount Zwegabin (strenuous walk 600 meter elevation difference, all the way stairs - only possible if in very good physical shape) to see the panoramic view of the Thanlwin river plains.

Alternatively, you may join a public boat from Mawlamyaing before lunch on Thanlwin (Salween) river upstream to Hpa-An (around 6 hours - not on all days available). You may need to carry a pre-arranged lunch. Your car will meet you at Hpa-An jetty.

Day 5. Drive back to Yangon. On the way before Thaton, you may visit Bayin Nyi Monastery and Cave, located at a single tall hill in the plains with a hot spring.
Further towards Yangon you may visit Bago town with Shwethalyaung reclining Buddha image and Shwemadaw Pagoda with a Mon style stupa. Continue driving back to Yangon.

Remarks:  This tour brings you away from the main tourist sites, road conditions in parts are very bad, even the better accommodation is hardly satisfactory standard. On the other hand, you will see unspoiled and charming places where few tourists go.

• Kindly keep in mind that our itineraries might need to be amended on short notice depending on condition of roads etc.

• In theory, the local authorities near Hpa-An could demand an alteration of route (which would mean to skip Hpa-An).
